Experience

35+ years in the oil industry with a proven track record of success for major IOCs in basins from Australasia, North Africa, North Sea, Atlantic Margins and the Gulf of Mexico. From exploring to developing, drilling wells to major acquisitions I can help you find prospects, understand resource potential, and quickly assess new growth opportunities. With degrees in both geology and geophysics I bring unique skills in seeing the reservoir in the data. Using grounded principles from well data and geological models, coupled with 3D geophysical mapping and the application of seismic attributes, to help understand the subsurface and make good exploration decisions.

With an MBA and a background of M&A I bring a strong skill set in resource estimation and reserve assurance, and economic and risk analysis of projects and portfolios. Focused on understanding the critical elements of a project to make good decisions in a timely manner.

I hold a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Geological Geophysics from Reading University, a Masters of Science in Petroleum Geology from Imperial College, a Masters of Business Administration from Kingston University, and am an active member of APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).

KEY SKILLS

Prospect Generation

Drawing on both geology and geophysics to see the reservoir in the seismic. Combine disciplines such as EOD mapping, sequence stratigraphy and seismic attributes to see prospectivety in the data.

Resource Estimation

With a deep understanding of the geological and geophysical inputs to volumetric ranges, and the risks associated with finding them. My global experience in portfolio management helps me reduce bias in understanding the size and risk of opportunities.

Portfolio Growth

Extensive experience built on my MBA and NV activities in Australasia, North Sea, East Coast and GoM. Resource estimation, economic analysis and portfolio growth strategy.

Project Management

Experienced leader of teams. Frame, manage and deliver projects from acreage acquisition, prospect generation and (subsurface) well delivery.

Mentoring and Coaching

Passing on knowledge through formal mentoring, classes and coaching.

Communication

Enthusiastic and passionate. Strong team player.

Expanded Skills

  • Focus in both geology and geophysics supports strengths in prospect generation and finding the geology in the seismic.

  • Broad experience from basins across the globe in exploration, development and NV/acquisition roles. Based in London, Perth, Vienna, Stavanger and Calgary.

  • Clastic and carbonate experience.

  • Quick learner and able to recognize critical aspects of a project to produce quality results.

  • Strong 2D/3D interpretation skills with structural/fault expertise.

  • Salt basin experience in North Sea and GoM.

  • Seismic acquisition and processing.

  • Seismic attribute analysis (fluid sub, inversion, AVO) to derisk reservoirs.

  • Sequence stratigraphy and geologic log analysis.

  • Volumetrics, risking and economic understanding of opportunities.

  • Focus on mentoring and teaching to support junior geoscientists.

  • Enthusiastic work ethic, excellent presentation skills and a demonstrated team player.

  • Expertise with a wide range of software platforms including Petrel, RocDoc, Hampton Russell, Petrosys and Landmark.

  • Active APEGA member.

Education

MBA, Kingston University 1997

M. Sc. Petroleum Geology, Imperial College London 1991

B. Sc Geological Geophysics, Reading University 1988

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT US

In my 20 years of leading and managing geoscientists in O&G exploration, I have not worked with an individual with the vision and capability to interpret the geology behind the seismic as Steve is able to. This advanced skillset therefore enables him to contribute to prospect generation at a very high level, while incorporating seismic attributes, seismic stratigraphy, structural geology and depositional environments into the prospect analysis. Steve is also is very experienced at reserve determinations, and works very well within a subsurface team of geoscientists and engineers to provide the volume and risking for economics. He also has strong proven experience as a project leader for drill and licence round projects.
I highly recommend Steve as a great addition to your team.
